2024 was a busy year for SWASAG starting with the annual fundraiser with Johnny Cowling in January held at The Alverton Hotel, another fabulous evening with lots of fun, games, laughter and dancing alongside raising a huge £4300. The money raised goes straight back into the charity funding 1 day per week of the Mesothelioma UK Clinical Nurse Specialist Salary.
Following on from this we had our usual monthly coffee mornings in both Truro and Plymouth with Truro having moved to a new venue The County Arms, this has been a positive move and a much more private area for all. These coffee mornings continue in 2025 1st Thursday of the month in Truro and the 3rd Thursday of the month in Plymouth.
International ladies day was held in March 2024 in Manchester and hosted by Mesothelioma UK, Helen and Julie attended the event representing SWASAG alongside South West Meso UK Nurse Christine Jones. This was an amazing lunch recognising those ladies affected by mesothelioma and the courage they have in their fight.
June 2024 found SWASAG on Plymouth Hoe supporting Armed Forces Day, with many visiting our stand, where we were able to raise the awareness in Asbestos related diseases. Liz Darlison CEO of Mesothelioma UK joined us on the Hoe after attending our Plymouth coffee morning earlier in the week. Tom Redfern from Gwella, An Asbestos Removal Company in the South West was kept extremely busy all day, huge thank you to Gwella for their continued support.
Action Mesothelioma Day was held in July and SWASAG’s event was held at Home Park Plymouth for the 2nd year, this was attended by many who have been affected by the legacy of asbestos exposure, SWASAG had a variety of speakers. The day also included a butterfly release as a way of remembering those we have lost.
Mesothelioma UK’s annual Patient & Carer Day was held in Leeds this year, it was felt this was too far to take patients and carers, therefore Helen, Julie & Steve attended representing SWASAG. The following week SWASAG held a special meeting and played a recording of the day to ensure all Patients had access to this truly informative and positive day. Lunch was provided for all attendees.
The Annual Christmas lunch was once again held at The Carlyon Bay Golf Club and attended by 72 patients, carers and families enjoying the event. SWASAG also held the most amazing raffle with some wonderful donated prizes.
