On 15th 2018 November 2018 SWASAG officially launched as a Charity
The launch was held at The Futures Inn Plymouth. The event was very well attended by patients and carers from both Plymouth and Truro support groups along with many supporters of the Charity. Christine Jones Mesothelioma UK nurse for the South West opened the day with a talk of how the charity began, evolving from the support groups initially set up in Plymouth and then Truro to this day. Christine also told of how amazed she was of all the trustees in bringing the groups forward and achieving charitable status earlier this year, their dedication in supporting all those affected by any asbestos related illness and raising much needed awareness of these diseases.
Dr Amy Roy Consultant Clinical Oncologist and Dr John Corcoran Consultant Chest Physician gave very interesting and informative presentations regarding Mesothelioma , explaining treatments and trials currently available which were well received by everyone.
The event gave everyone the chance to meet others in similar circumstances from different areas and access to Doctors and nurses who work tirelessly in helping those affected.
The day was closed by the trustees when Helen Rowe gave thanks to everyone who had attended and helped to support them in getting to this point. She gave personal thanks to everyone who had helped her and her family throughout her fathers illness and assured the group that along with the other trustees they would endeavour to support all people affected by asbestos related illnesses in future, fundraise and raise awareness.
